📖 Comprehensive Study Notes Summary

### Human Reproduction

#### Hormonal Control of the Menstrual Cycle (28-day cycle)
1. **Follicular Phase (Days 1-13)**: Anterior pituitary secretes **FSH** -> stimulates ovarian follicle maturation. Developing follicle secretes **Estrogen** -> thickens uterine endometrium.
2. **Ovulation (Day 14)**: High estrogen triggers **LH surge** from pituitary -> mature Graafian follicle ruptures, releasing secondary oocyte into oviduct.
3. **Luteal Phase (Days 15-28)**: Ruptured follicle becomes **Corpus Luteum**, secreting high **Progesterone** -> maintains vascular spongy endometrium.
4. If no fertilization occurs: Corpus luteum degenerates -> progesterone plunges -> menstruation occurs.

#### Functions of the Placenta
- Transfer of oxygen, glucose, amino acids, and antibodies from maternal blood to fetal blood.
- Removal of fetal metabolic wastes (urea, carbon dioxide) into maternal blood.
- Endocrine function: Secretes progesterone and estrogen to sustain pregnancy.
- Barrier preventing mixing of maternal and fetal blood (protects fetus from high maternal blood pressure and incompatible blood types).
