Key Competencies

  • Main: 1.0 Demonstrate mastery of the concepts, principles and processes of Biology
  • Specific: 1.1 Describe the physiological, anatomical and ecological processes of living organisms

Specific Learning Objectives

  • Define autotrophic nutrition and photosynthesis.
  • Write the word and chemical equations of photosynthesis.

  • Explain the role of chlorophyll, light, carbon dioxide, and water in photosynthesis.
  • Identify essential macro and micro mineral elements in plants and their deficiency symptoms.

📖 Comprehensive Study Notes Summary

### Photosynthesis
Photosynthesis is the process by which green plants manufacture glucose from carbon dioxide and water using sunlight energy trapped by chlorophyll.

Equation: 6CO2 + 6H2O -> C6H12O6 + 6O2 (in presence of sunlight and chlorophyll)

#### Internal Leaf Structure
1. **Cuticle & Upper Epidermis**: Transparent layer preventing desiccation.
2. **Palisade Mesophyll**: Densely packed cells with high chloroplast density.
3. **Spongy Mesophyll**: Loosely packed cells with large intercellular air spaces for gas diffusion.
4. **Vascular Bundle**: Xylem brings water; phloem translocates sucrose.
5. **Stomata & Guard Cells**: Regulate gaseous exchange and transpiration.

#### Plant Minerals
- **Nitrogen (N)**: Synthesis of amino acids and proteins (deficiency: chlorosis, stunted growth).
- **Magnesium (Mg)**: Central constituent of chlorophyll (deficiency: yellowing between leaf veins).
